Over 35,000 visitors have viewed the Lotus Sutra Exhibition as of October 18, achieving a 15,000 increase over six days, an average of 2,500 visitors per day over the past week!On 15 October, Professor Nirmala Sharma, Art Historian and Professor of Buddhist Studies from the International Academy of Indian Culture came all the way from New Delhi, India to Singapore to give a public lecture. The title of her lecture was “Dissemination of the Lotus Sutra from India to East Asia”. The full-house lecture was held at the Chamber at the Arts House. Professor Sharma delivered an insightful lecture on the distinctive characteristics of the Lotus Sutra, the Chinese translations of the Lotus Sutra by Kumarajiva and the Lotus Sutra in Dunhuang through highlighting the mural paintings from the Dunhuang Mogao Caves.Over the past week, the exhibition hosted students and teachers from the Global Indian International School (Balestier) and DPS International School. The students were full of curiosity and earnestness in understanding the rich content of the exhibition. They also got hands-on with the badge-making and origami activities and enjoyed the interactive games at the Engagement Corner.The exhibition also welcomed friends from Jamiyah Singapore led by President Dr Mohd Hasbi Abu Bakar, Management and Staff from Tzu Chi Singapore led by Chief Executive Mr Low Swee Seh, members from the Tampines West IRCC and Keat Hong CC Women Executive Committee among others.
Credit goes to the selfless volunteers who have contributed their time to take on the various roles such as guides, ambassadors, ushers and security to create the best experience for all visitors to the exhibition.
Mr Stanley Tan, a visitor to the exhibition shared his feedback:
“… I want to thank the (ushers/guides) who painstakingly took time and trouble to explain to me what each exhibit was. In that, I understand the beauty of this journey. Even though I came alone, I did not feel alone due to these dedicated ushers. The gentleman at the caves and the young lady at the parables. Thank you for being part of my journey and being an example of the faith you live by.”
