Soka Gakkai International

SGS is part of an international network of Soka affiliated organisations under the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) movement that has membership in 192 countries and territories worldwide.

The SGI was established in 1975 in Guam with the sole aim and mission of contributing to peace, culture and education based on the philosophy and ideals of Nichiren Buddhism.

SGI members share a profound commitment to the values of peace, culture and education although the scope and nature of activities in each country differ according to the culture and characteristics of the society.

In its capacity and status as non governmental organisation (NGO), the SGI has supported the United Nations by initiating public information programmes that aim, through exhibitions, symposium and other forums, to promote awareness of the issues of war and peace and the feasibility of peaceful alternatives.

The peace, culture and education movement of the SGI is founded on the principle of respect for the dignity of life, a key teaching in the Buddhist philosophy.

Affiliated in this social mission of the SGI, the promotion of peace, culture and education is central to SGS and its activities.
