Celebrating Heritage with Residents from St. Andrew’s Nursing Home (Henderson)

On May 5, 36 SSA volunteers spent a heart-warming afternoon with 20 female senior residents from the St. Andrew’s Nursing Home (Henderson) “SANH”, engaging them over music, songs and personal makeovers based on the theme “Little Nyonya”. This is the 2nd year SSA is partnering with SANH to bring joy to the elderly in celebration of Mother’s Day in the month of May.

Volunteers from the SSA Women Division Passion Group and Young Women Division Bluebelle Group (both SSA function Groups with members who have interest in make-up) prepared various activities for the residents. Aside from the personal makeovers, volunteers performed a dance using traditional paper umbrellas as props, reminiscing the olden times. Volunteers also engaged the senior residents in craft work, assisting them to create coasters with customized designs.

In celebration of Father’s Day in June, male volunteers from the Soka Volunteers Group (SVG) also teamed up with volunteers from the SSA Women Division Passion Group and Young Women Division Bluebelle Group to spend a meaningful afternoon with male senior residents of the SANH . The SVG volunteers engaged the elderly in a series of simple games, while the make-up group volunteers prepared a dance and refreshments (including coffee and toast) based on the theme “My Kopi-O”.

Following the activities, SSA volunteers also accompanied the SANH residents to the adjacent Soka Peace Centre to admire the beautiful blooms at the Kaneko Orchid garden.
