On November 30, some 1,100 people attended a talk centering on the theme, “Dawn After the Dark – What if I have Mental Illness?” This talk is a peace initiative by SSA Women and Young Women Divisions, co-organized with Silver Ribbon (Singapore)
Guest of honor for this event was Ms Ellen Lee, Member of Parliament for Sembawang Grassroots Constituency. Other guest speakers included Dr Lee Cheng, Vice President of Silver Ribbon (Singapore) and Senior Consultant Psychiatrist of Institute of Mental Health, Dr Rita Goh, Author of book Back from the Brink of Insanity, Ms Wee Li Lin, Filmmaker of Gone Shopping, and Ms Porsche Poh, Executive Director of Silver Ribbon (Singapore).
A mini skit portraying the common symptoms of mental illness, and various stigmas associated was also put up at the event. Through this skit, speakers dispelled many of the common misconceptions of mental illness, which is as common as one in every six person, and ways of coping with it through medication and support from the family members and society.
