Family Day with a Difference

Family fun with the community – this aptly describes SSA Family Day 2012 on August 20. A record 17,500 people, including backstage helpers and performers, turned up for the event and plunged right into the carnival-like spirit that filled every corner of the SSA headquarters, as well as the neighbouring Tampines West Community Club.

Visitors at the SSA-HQ were entertained with activities for the family that included a family photo booth (a favourite with many), cultural performances at the auditorium, nail art for the fashion enthusiasts, animated shows for children, and a walk down SSA’s 45-year memory lane in the form of a photographic exhibition.
Mr Heng Swee Kiat, Minister for Education and MP for Tampines GRC was Guest of Honor. He launched the opening of the exhibition, titled “If You Light A Lantern for Another, It Will Also Brighten Your Way.” Minister Heng spent two hours viewing the exhibits and engaging in dialogue with youth representatives.

Next door at the Tampines West Community Club (TWCC), the excitement was no less, thanks to the great support of the TWCC committee and staff. Visitors participated in the health talks and exercise routines at the auditorium. The sight of participants with children, infants in arms, and senior folks surrounded by children and grandchildren, leisurely browsing and chatting with friends and familiar faces, painted a picture of family fun and bonding.

Despite the sweltering heat that intensified as the day progressed, beaming faces greeted each other all the same. This was indeed a Family Day celebrated with a difference – a day well spent with family and friends, and residents of the community.
