Chingay 2018: Grooving with Passion, Youth in Unison

Chingay Parade 2018

Grooving to the upbeat fusion music of k-pop, popular song and drum beat, 43 dancers from the Soka Youth Dance Crew performed in the finale segment of Chingay 2018 held over two nights on February 23 and 24. The dazzling street procession started its parade route from the F1 Pit Building and ended at the Marina Bay Floating Platform. Both Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Halimah Yacob graced the event on the Friday and Saturday respectively.

SSA performers, dressed in vibrant colours of orange, pink, blue and white resembling a school uniform, performed in front of 200,000 audiences for the two parade nights. With the theme “Cultural Funtasy” and accompanied by illuminated figurines and extravaganza floats, their performance were part of a large contingent of 750-strong representatives, in collaboration with the People’s Association Youth Movement.

Started in 1973, the festival began as a neighbourhood parade to celebrate the Lunar New Year season with only Chinese cultural elements. Today, the Chingay Parade has evolved to be one of Asia’s grandest street and floats parade. With the involvement of many local and overseas organisations, it highlights the colourful multi-ethnic and cosmopolitan cultures that is uniquely Singapore as well as showcasing exciting global cultures.

This year marks the 34th time SSA is participating in the annual joyous celebration since 1981.
