Soka Volunteers Group (SVG) members held a series of handicraft and storytelling sessions with students from the PPIS (Singapore Muslim Women’s Association) Student Care Centre in the month of June as part of the school holiday activities.
During the handicraft sessions, students learnt how to fold simple origami and designed hand-made cards to show appreciation to their fathers for the upcoming Father’s Day.
During the storytelling session, the students watched a short children animation story entitled ‘The Princess of the Desert Kingdom’ by Daisaku Ikeda, which teaches the importance of protecting the environment. Daisaku Ikeda children’s stories impart hope, courage, friendship and peace through vivid adventures of children around the world and seek to inspire them to believe in themselves and have big dreams.
SVG members led the students in group discussion and presentation of learning points from the story and also highlighted to them the importance of recycling.Prior to the activity sessions, SVG members held pre-briefing sessions to learn and familiarize themselves on how to teach origami-making to the students, and to prepare towards facilitating the storytelling session.
