SMU Student Division Adopts “Peace Pillar” for International Day of Peace

In commemoration of September 21 “International Day of Peace”, student of Singapore Management University (SMU) and SMU Organizing committee organized the “Adopt-a-Peace-Pillar” campaign, where 10 pillars in SMU were designed with themes relating to peace.

SMU Student Division members took part as one of the 10 teams of student volunteers in the “Adopt-a-Peace-Pillar” endeavour and created a “Cherry Tree” based on SGI President Daisaku Ikeda’s children’s stories “The Cherry Tree”.

The tree is made up of cherry blossom which were “Peace Resolutions” penned by SSA student members and friends of SMU. About 400 peace resolutions were collected in all where personal pledges for peace efforts were made. SMU President Howard Hunter personally unveiled the 10 pillars for peace on September 21, and also penned personal peace message for “The Cherry Tree”.

One of the event highlights was also when 29 SMU foreign students took part in the recitation of the peace pledge — “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in their own mother tongues as part of the Peace Day ceremony held in SMU. The event was also featured in The Straits Times and Today newspapers.
