On August 1, SSA commemorated the 39th SSA day graced by some 1,200 leaders and members representatives in attendance. Some 30 guests including Member of Parliament at Marine Parade GRC Dr Fatimah Lateef; President of Jamiyah Muslim Missionary Society, Mr Abu Bakar Maidin; President of the Photographic Society of Singapore, Mr David Tay, and many other grassroots leaders and friends were present.
Besides the cultural celebrations and the viewing of a new SSA video production, the highlight of the meeting was the presentation of SSA awards to many friends who have supported the organisation in peace, cultural and education endeavours over the years. A total of 11 awards were presented from the three categories, namely, the SSA Friendship Award, the Soka Women for Peace Award and the SSA Goodwill Award.
In her acceptance speech, Dr Fatimah Lateef shared, “Indeed, when the University gives away an honorary award to someone, it is usually the honour of the University. And tonight, when women are given award from the Singapore Soka Association, the honour is indeed ours.” Member of Parliament, Dr Fatimah Lateef, is also a Consultant Emergency Physician of the Singapore General Hospital and a board member of the Mercy Relief.
This meeting signifies yet another milestone in the annals of SSA in building stronger friendship and trust in the community.
[SSA Friendship Award was presented to Mr Perng Peck Seng, Chairman, Cultural Committee Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Association.
The five Soka Women for Peace Award recipients are Dr Fatimah Lateef, Member of Parliament at Marine Parade GRC; Dr Agnes Chang Shook Cheong Associate Professor, Psychological Studies Academic Group National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University; Dr Elena Lui Hah Wah, Associate Professor, Psychological Studies Academic Group National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University; Dr Phyllis Chew Ghim Lian, Associate Professor, English Language and Literature Academic Group National Institute of Education Nanyang Technological University and Mrs. Rosy Nakhooda, Immediate Past President University Women’s Association Country Chair Rotary International Foundation.
The five SSA Goodwill Award recipients are Mr Hassan Bin Ahmad, Chief Executive, Lien Aid; Mr Nah Juay Hng, Group Director, Networks, People’s Association; Mr Patrick Han Chi Kwang, Director, Community Development Council Planning and Development People’s Association; Mr Foong Hin Cheong, Deputy Director, South East Community Development Division, People’s Association; Mr Tan Choon Hooi, Deputy Director, Corporate Planning Organisational Development, People’s Association.]
