On June 23, some 20 SSA youths participated in the launch of the National Youth Forum (NYF) 2006 entitled, “Take the Lead, Be the Change” held at the Skate Park, Orchard Road. Guest of Honour for this event was Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Chairman of the National Youth Council, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
This year’s NYF sees a total of 90 participants in all, aged 17 to 25. Through the selection of written submissions and interviews pertaining to national issues, five SSA youth representatives were short-listed to be part of NYF 2006. Following this launch, they went through a series of case studies, learning journeys and dialogues with decision-makers to gain a better understanding of policy-making processes and governance in Singapore. They also studied selected national issues, recommended changes and saw through projects to address these issues.
At the launch, SSA Youth Division also put up a mini-exhibition to introduce the activities of the SSA Youth Division to the public. Many other youth organisations including the People’s Association Youth Movement, Metropolitan YMCA, Malay Youth Literary Association etc., were present at this event. The news segment that evening featured Minister Vivian with SSA youths at the launch.
