In a move to further safeguard religious harmony in Singapore, SSA has joined more than 250 key religious communities in the Commitment to Safeguard Religious Harmony (the ‘Commitment’) in Singapore. The commitment is seen as an enhancement to the existing Declaration of Religious Harmony, in that it lays out specific ways for Singaporeans to interact with each other.
A summary of the Commitment is as follows:
- Upholding Freedom of Religion
- Building Stronger Bonds
- Fostering a Culture of Consideration and Mutual Understanding
- Sharing and Propagating Beliefs Respectfully and Sensitively
- Maintaining Solidarity in Crisis
- Supporting Institutional Efforts
- Safeguarding Religious Harmony for a Better Singapore for All
The Commitment was launched at the occasion of the International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS) which was organized by Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. Held on 19 June, ICCS was the brainchild of President Halimah Yacob who was also the Guest of Honour. More than 1,000 international delegates across academia, government, religious groups and civil society gathered in attendance at the Raffles City Convention Centre.
