On 6 February 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish-Syria border, followed by more than 2,100 aftershocks. The recent winter storm and plummeting temperatures have also hindered rescue efforts. This series of incidents has resulted in more than 36,000 fatalities and displaced more than thousands of families.
In response to this unfortunate disaster, Soka Gakkai Singapore donated a sum of $50,000 to the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) to support relief and recovery efforts in Türkiye and Syria. A symbolic presentation ceremony took place at the Singapore Red Cross where SGS General Director Tay Eng Kiat, Chairperson Chan Mei Wah and Honorary Secretary Yong Kim San presented the cheque to SRC Secretary General/ CEO Benjamin J. Williams on 13 February.
