The 12th Annual SMU-Ikeda Peace and Harmony Lecture, titled “Living Ethically in a World of Affluence and Extreme Poverty,” took place on September 9, drawing some 320 attendees to SMU’s Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium.
Guest Speaker Dr Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics, Emeritus at Princeton University, explored the ethical responsibilities of individuals and companies in addressing extreme poverty. The question-and-answer segment was moderated by Dr Joshua Luczak, Assistant Professor of Philosophy (Education) at SMU.
Through his thought-provoking lecture, Dr Singer challenged conventional assumptions about personal consumption and social responsibility, and highlighted how companies can also contribute to the reduction of extreme poverty, underscoring the need for greater ethical action at both individual and institutional levels.
