Realizing Dignity and Happiness for both Oneself and Others

In his 40th peace proposal released on January 26, 2022, SGI President shares, “It is crucial to improve conditions for all these vulnerable populations with an attentive focus on each individual. The time has come, as we squarely face these realities, to break free from the classical idea of mutual advantage. …I likewise cannot but sense a commonality of spirit with the way of life that is the ideal of the SGI — a commitment to realizing dignity and happiness for both oneself and others.”

Let’s learn from a story quoted in the Peace Proposal from the Mahayana Buddhist text the Vimalakirti Sutra that includes an episode resonating with this worldview and sensitivity to life.

Establishing a Global Solidarity of Action

In President Ikeda’s 2021 Peace Proposal titled, “Value-Creation in a Time of Crisis”, an anecdote on refugees giving back to the communities they lived in was shared to illustrate the importance of establishing a global solidarity of action.

“The irrepressible desire to do what one can to help even one person, the awareness of and concern for others, the wholehearted action taken on their behalf that arises from living in the same community … such awareness and action, sustained and repeated despite differences of nationality or circumstance, can cultivate the soil from which resilience arises and grows. The fundamental challenges will be to create and maintain a shared awareness of the need to work in solidarity to overcome the present crisis and to expand the number of people taking responsibility to build resilience in their respective societies.”

Based on the Lotus Sutra’s teaching on the respect for human dignity, let us dispel all forms of discrimination and build an inclusive society for all. As one person after another comes into contact with this notion that all without exception inherently possess the most sublime state of being, they will also begin to recognize the weight and value of the dignity of others.
