The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of Peace (IDP) is marked each year on September 21, when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflicts and promote peace. The Singapore Management University (SMU) has been commemorating the IDP since 2006 and SSA’s Student Division members studying in SMU have also been actively supporting this event along with the campus community over the past few years.
The event sought to engage and allow SMU students and staff to realise that they can play a part for peace as well. Throughout the week from September 14-18, SD members passionately went about spreading the message of peace on campus. They did it through the screening of the “Gandhi, King, Ikeda: Community Builders” video, which features three individuals from three different cultures and countries — Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Daisaku Ikeda – sharing the common path of profound dedication to promoting peace and improving the lives of all people. They also distributed beautiful badges and decals with meaningful peace quotes by Gandhi, King or Ikeda printed on them.
