National Day celebrations at Soka Kindergarten (SK) was nothing short of heart-warming and educational experience for the children!
During the weekly newspaper article sharing in class, children from different classes brought the same article titled “The Hungriest Place on Earth” (The Straits Times, Saturday, April 10, 2010). The article described hungry and malnourished children in Sudan who need to be fed with peanut butter to provide the energy that they need. The children were reminded of that they are far more fortunate than the children who were struggling to survive.
After much discussions, the children decided to hold a garage sale to raise funds for children in Sudan. The students and teachers contributed their toys, books and other items toward the sale. “The children learnt many aspects about a garage sale like assigning assigning appropriate prices to each item. The children were also involved in selling the items and some of them really made good salespersons. We were also heartened to see the quieter ones working hard behind-the-scenes to ensure that things were running fine! It is amazing how, with passion to do something to help others, we can create a project that can become an enjoyable learning experience for these children.” shared Ms Jeannie Ng, the coordinating teacher for the project.
The culmination of this event took place on 5 August 2010 when the kindergarten celebrated Singapore’s 45th National Day. The total collection of $564.70 was handed to Mr Mohd Hassan Barqia, Commercial Attach Assistant of Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia (Singapore) by student representatives.
The final activity of this special day was the participation by K1 and K2 students in the “Fold-A-Heart Campaign” organised by SingTel. The children folded red paper hearts and deposited them into their very own “SK Post Office mailbox”, which were subsequently collected and mailed out. For every heart folded, SingTel would donate a dollar to various charitable organisations.
Well done, children of Soka Kindergarten!
