On this bright Sunday morning of August 22, 2010, some 1,700 young women turned up in full force with many bringing friends and their family members along to West Coast Park for the Nurturing nAture, Embracing Life (LEAN) Walk-a-Jog organised by the Singapore Soka Association (SSA) Young Women Division (YWD). It is part of the division’s on-going efforts to expand friendship and contribute back to the community and society, as well as promote healthy living and environmental protection.
Prior to start of the walk-a-jog, the YWD Fife-and-Drums Corps performed two energetic pieces coupled with joyful dance moves to encourage the participants. The walk-a-jog was then flagged off by Guest-of-Honour, SSA General Director Mr Ong Bon Chai.
“We felt the idea of having this healthy lifestyle walk-a-jog session would be something refreshing for young women. In addition, we wanted to generate awareness towards contributing to a sustainable green movement by, firstly, putting up the new environmental exhibition Seeds of Hope: Visions of sustainability, steps towards change, created by the SGI and the Earth Charter International, and also, sharing information on what individuals can do to contribute towards this cause as a lead up to this event,” shared Li Jin Haw, Chairperson for the walk-a-jog’s organising committee.
The YWDs came, ran and conquered – be it their competition or their personal limitations with sunny-perfect weather with cooling breezes blowing in from the sea. Most importantly, the lessons learnt and camaraderie forged through this activity has been priceless!
