Chingay 2012 was truly an unforgettable and remarkable event. It encompassed the journey of some 1,000 SSA youth members and friends coming together in unison to “contribute vibrantly to the nation as excellent citizens of Singapore”, as inspired by SGI President Ikeda, and alongside many others from all walks of life.
It has been five years since an enchanting new orchid hybrid of exquisite elegance was named in honour of Mrs Kaneko Ikeda, Honorary Women Leader of Soka Gakkai International in recognition for her commitment and selfless contribution to the movement of building lasting global peace.
On February 4th, the President of the Singapore Buddhist Lodge (SBL), Mr Lee Bock Guan and three other delegates pay a goodwill visit to the SSA Headquarters where a dialogue session between the two organisations’ representatives ensued.
Everyone is looking forward to the completion of a new Soka Centre at the current Wishart Road site at Telok Blangah; as well as the highly significant Mentor and Disciple Heritage Centre.
While busy with preparation for the Lunar New Year, 35 Soka Volunteer Group (SVG) members halted their chores to accompany 20 beneficiaries from the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) on a joyous excursion to Chinatown on January 12th.
On January 1st, members of the Soka Youth Dance Crew and Sunflower Dance Ensemble presented energising performances at the Chinatown Chinese New Year Celebrations 2012 opening ceremony to add cheer to the festive season.
On December 12, members and friends of SSA Student Division (SD) filled the Mochtar Riady Auditorium at the Singapore Management University for the Seventh Student Peace Lecture (SPL). This year’s lecture, themed “Fiction, Imagination and the Surprises They Bring”, was delivered with refreshing passion and humour by distinguished writer and the first recipient of the Singapore Literature Prize in 1992, Ms Suchen Christine Lim. Ms Helen Choo, Principal of Tampines Junior College and long-time friend of Ms Lim, chaired the lecture.
40 SSA Senior Citizens participated in the “Nurture Your Mind for Older Persons” (NYMOP) programme organised by Fei Yue Community Services. Through the three interactive workshops held at the SSA Headquarters in June and July, the NYMOP aimed to inculcate an active and optimistic approach towards ageing. In the workshops, the participants were introduced to the importance of mental well-being, engaged themselves in mental stimulation activities and learnt practical ways to foster interpersonal skills through role-playing and skits.
