Student Division members from the Singapore Management University (SMU) took part in this year’s International Day of Peace (IDP) Visual Arts exhibition organized by the school. This is an annual event held by the SMU in commemorating the United Nations designated Day of Peace September 21. The art exhibition will be held for one month from September 19.
A total of six art pieces were short listed and displayed based on this year’s theme of the IDP, “Peace and Freedom”. Assoc Prof Low Aik Meng, Dean of Students, officially launched the opening of the IDP Visual Arts exhibition on September 19.
The Student Division members used plaster and foam to build a life-size artwork symbolizing the Chinese character “ping” (平). The artwork originates from the common desire to achieve peace and the Chinese-calligraphy style indicates “freedom” for it being “drawn” freely. The symmetrical of ping represents the equality.
In a short write up on the artwork, the SMU Student Division members also shared on Second Soka Gakkai President Josei Toda’s “Declaration of the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons” in 1957.
