The spirit of volunteerism is very much alive and celebrated as seen in the cheerful smiles and enthusiasm of the 160 Soka volunteers who turned up early at the Soka Youth Centre on the morning of June 16 for a day of learning.
To inspire the volunteers that selfless service to others can be a rejuvenating experience, two SSA members shared their experiences in voluntary community service. Mdm Karen Heng who had successfully battled and triumphed over cancer many years back, has made a name for herself in supporting and counselling others who face the same ordeal. Her positive attitude in loving life and cherishing every moment is evident in her cheerful and warm disposition towards all who come in contact with her.
The participants also learned from Jeff Toh, the challenges and rewarding experience working with delinquent youths. Experiences from the SVG befriending programme with the hospices were also insightful. Most importantly, everyone realized that the principle behind volunteerism is the belief in and respect for the dignity of life as taught in Nichiren Buddhism. Despite thoughts of giving up along the way, the thought that by volunteering one could effect a positive change in another person’s life by extending a helping hand is sufficient.
The training programme was fitting preparation and encouragement for the Soka Volunteer Group as they aspire towards the 10th anniversary of the Group’s establishment.
