“Seeds of Hope” Sprout in National University Campus

To raise the level of awareness about sustainable development among the teachers and students of the National University of Singapore (NUS), enabling more to further understand about the efforts and contributions of Soka Gakkai International and the Earth Charter Initiative in this area, and to also spread its key message that “It starts with one”, the Student Division group in NUS (NUSSD) collaborated with the Design and Environment Club (DE Club) of the school to hold the “Seeds of Hope: Visions of sustainability, steps toward change” exhibition at the school’s Central Forum for two days.

As is not a core-curriculum activities group within the school, it encountered quite a few setbacks before the team was finally able to hold the exhibition on February 17 and 18, 2011. Through their tireless and shared efforts in the short span of 16 hours over the two days, the 43 exhibition guides from NUSSD managed to introduce and share the exhibition with a total of 337 individuals on campus. These exhibition-viewers were not only from the student body or the faculty, but also comprised external guests, including an Indonesian university professor on vacation to Singapore. The sight of the exhibition-viewers penning down their personal wishes and thoughts on the impression cards brought immense joy and moved everyone. Each of them attentively listened to the explanation of the exhibition by the guides. Many queried about where they could obtain relevant information, while some flashed out their camera phones to capture thought–provoking quotes from the panels. One by one, seeds of hope were planted and sprouting within the hearts of each individual, hopefully, seeds of hope planted would grow robustly in different fields, and may the flowers of friendship also continue to blossom among the members of NUSSD!
