On 21 November, over 900 people participated in the virtual Soka Women Lecture that discussed on the topic “Families Emerging Stronger: Overcoming Family Issues and Coping with Stress Arising From Covid”. The lecture was held in collaboration with Fei Yue Community Services, with the Ministry of Social and Family as one of the activities in support of the Year of Celebrating SG Women.
In the recent years, the pandemic has undoubtedly affected all of us. In addition to the worries and concerns about our physical health, everyone is also increasingly aware of the long-term effect it has on families, particularly on the well-being of individuals at every age.
With all these concerns shared by a spectrum of individuals, how can we become more resilient and cope better with these stressful circumstances? How do we forge stronger family bonds during Covid?
Ms Poh Ee-Lyn, a Senior Social Worker at Fei Yue’s Community Mental Health Department shared the various types and sources of stress, followed by actionable frameworks and tips on first managing self, followed by highlighting the importance of seeking help and support when it is required. This was followed by a lively question and answer session where the audience raised many questions pertaining to the subject.
Ms Teresa Wong, a final year student at the National University of Singapore shares,
“The lecture was very meaningful and beneficial to me. It is not only relevant and applicable to women of all ages, but in my opinion, it could be extended to the male population as well. It taught me how to cope with the various challenges and stresses that I may face by remaining calm. It also reinforces the importance of doing our human revolution to overcome our hardships instead of trying to change our environment instead.”
Ms Samantha Lee, a SGS Women Division shares her thoughts as well:
“The lecture was relevant as it is applicable to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. The tips shared by the speaker on handling stresses are very helpful. This lecture is a good reminder for women who are always multi-tasking to take a break before overstretching oneself.”
