Interview with Recipient of SSA-Ikeda Peace Award for Academic Year 2020-2021
For more than two decades, SSA has been enjoying warm relations with our North East Community Development Council (CDC) partners due to the locality of three SSA Centres in the North East. With the current Covid-19 situation gradually easing, SSA General Director and staff caught up with Mayor of North East CDC Mr Desmond Choo and his team on June 22, discussing on the various challenges brought about by the pandemic and on possible future collaborations.
On 13 April, SSA was invited by HCA Hospice Care to share with staff from the HCA Psychosocial Services on Nichiren Buddhism’s perspective on life and death.
In collaboration with the Singapore Red Cross, SSA will be hosting a Blood Donation Drive on 8 May, Saturday, from 10am-4pm, at the SSA Headquarters. Interested blood donors, please call 6220 0183 to book an appointment sloto facilitate safe distancingng.
22 March, is World Water Day, an annual United Nations’ observance focusing on the importance of freshwater.
On 13 March, more than 680 people participated in the online Soka Women Lecture 2021 that discussed the theme, “Strengthening Our Emotional Resilience Beyond Covid-19”.
Over the past month, Soka Volunteers Group (SVG) members have been engaging with our partners – the PPIS and SPD Toa Payoh – over virtual sessions to bring joy and hope to the young and old.
To mark this month of great significance – 90th anniversary of Soka Gakkai’s Founding and 20th anniversary of SGI President Ikeda’s third visit to Singapore – SSA is honoured to establish the Singapore Soka Education Bursary with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the leading and oldest higher education institution in Singapore founded since 1905. Mr Ikeda first did a book donation to the University during his inaugural visit to the Lion City in 1988.

On 25 November 2020, the symbolic ceremony was held at the SSA Headquarters with guests from NUS in attendance. Starting from academic year 2021/2022, the Singapore Soka Education Bursary will be awarded to financially needy undergraduates enrolled in any course of study at NUS, bursary recipients would need to demonstrate contributions to the community through efforts in volunteerism and peace work, as well as qualities in leadership and social responsibility. Heartiest congratulations to all on the new milestone in this significant year!
