On the morning of June 12, a delegation of 29 senior Chinese government officials visited SSA HQ to learn about SGS’s role in promoting racial harmony and social cohesiveness in Singapore’s multi-racial and multi-religious society.
Dr Kenneth Low, member of the SSA Peace Committee represented SSA to speak on the Earth Charter and its principles at the closing plenary Session at the National Youth Environment Forum 2008. Held on May 10, the Guest of Honor for this event themed “Beyond Awareness”, was Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
“I am excited to share the importance of protecting the environment to my juniors,” said Poh Jun Jie from Damai Secondary School, who helped to set up the “Before It Is Too Late” exhibition at East View Primary School.
In commemoration of Earth Day on April 22, the international exhibition “Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter and Human Potential” opens at the Pasir Ris Park at the Earth Day events organized by the National Parks Board.
The First Youth for Peace Interfaith Symposium was held at the Singapore Expo Hall 4 on March 16.
Through the various collaborations between the Singapore Management University (SMU) and SSA since 2005, much rapport and trust has been established between the two organizations. As such, the invitation of establishing the SSA-Ikeda Peace Award within the SMU, comes in recognition of SGS’s invaluable contribution to SMU and to society at large.
The Seventh Daisaku Ikeda Annual Lecture was successfully held on December 10, at the SSA Headquarters. Speaking on the topic, “Buddhism, Singapore and Interfaith Dialogue”, Director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), HE Ambassador K Kesavapany engaged the audience throughout the session with his lively sharing. Chairing the session was Professor Howard Hunter, President of the Singapore Management University.
Some 50 children and adults turned up for the screening of the “Treasures of the Desert” story held at the Queenstown Regional Library on November 21.
Over the past 14 years since its establishment, Soka Kindergarten (SK) has gained the recognition of the Ministry of Education as a model kindergarten that provides outstanding preschool education.
The third SSA Student Peace Lecture was held at the Singapore Management University (SMU) on November 21. Newspapers Columnist, Advisor and Former President of Malaysian Aids Council, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir was the distinguished speaker sharing to the crowd of some 250 who packed the Ngee Ann Kongsi Auditorium. Chairing the lecture was Prof Kirpal Singh from SMU, Associate Professor of English Literature and Creative Thinking.
