On August 21, 2008, the inaugural Mahatma Gandhi-Daisaku Ikeda Peace Research Conference was held at Hotel Parkroyal. Chairman of East Asian Institute Professor Wang Gungwu delivered the welcome remarks.
On August 20, Professor Tu Wei Ming of Harvard University delivered a lecture to some 650 people at the SSA Headquarters. Chairing the lecture was Professor Zheng Yong Nian, Director of East Asia Institute.
On July 29, Chairman of the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, Dr Neelakanta Radhakrishnan presented “Orienting Education for the Sake of Peace” at the Fourth SSA Student Peace Lecture.
“Fundamentally, if we seek to build harmonious religious relations and establish peace in the world, we need to cultivate and nurture the power of goodness within all human beings. Whether people are religious or non-religious, that goodness is inherent within their lives.
More than 500 children and parents from SSA and Ba’alwi Mosque were present at the SSA Headquarters on the evening of May 28 to pen their love and well-wishes on message tags for the children of the earthquake-affected in Sichuan.
On May 25, SSA presented two cheques totaling S$195,346 (of which S$147.961 was for Sichuan and S$47,385 for Myanmar) to Mercy Relief (MR) in support of the relief efforts in disaster-hit Myanmar and Sichuan, China.
The First Youth for Peace Interfaith Symposium was held at the Singapore Expo Hall 4 on March 16.
Through the various collaborations between the Singapore Management University (SMU) and SSA since 2005, much rapport and trust has been established between the two organizations. As such, the invitation of establishing the SSA-Ikeda Peace Award within the SMU, comes in recognition of SGS’s invaluable contribution to SMU and to society at large.
In commemoration of September 21 “International Day of Peace”, student of Singapore Management University (SMU) and SMU Organizing committee organized the “Adopt-a-Peace-Pillar” campaign, where 10 pillars in SMU were designed with themes relating to peace.
